There is nothing quite like tasting a piece of homemade pita bread fresh from the oven. My yummy version is simple and does not require a lot of time to make. With a few basic ingredients from your pantry, you can prepare homemade pitas for any of your favorite Middle Eastern dishes.

Ingredients

      • 1 Ounce Active Dry Yeast (2 Packages)
      • 1 Teaspoon Granulated Sugar
      • 1 1/2 Cups Warm Water
      • 4 Cups All-Purpose Flour
      • 1 Teaspoon Salt
      • 2 Tablespoons Extra-Virgin Olive Oil

Directions

  1. In a large bowl, add yeast, sugar, and water and whisk until blended. Let mixture stand for 10 minutes or until foamy. In another large bowl, mix the flour and salt. Add flour mixture to the yeast mixture and stir well to form a dough.
  2. On a lightly floured surface, turn out the dough and knead for 10 minutes or until elastic & smooth. Transfer the dough to a lighlty greasd bowl, and cover with a tea towel and let the dough rise 1 hour.
  3. Punch the dough down, knead 4-5 times and divide into 20 small dough balls. Meanwhile, preheat the oven to 500 degrees. Line 2 sheet pans with a silpat or a sheet of parchment paper and set aside.
  4. On a lightly floured surface, roll each ball into a thin disk. and transfer onto the prepared sheetpans, and allow to rise for another 30 minutes.
  5. Bake for about 5 minutes, or until nicely golden brown.
